Deline's Message
In Haiti, people live their lives in darkness. When I came to the United
States, I realized just how unfortunate and dark my world in Haiti really
was. In rural Haiti there is no electricity. It is really hard to live in a
world without lights as I now know. The only light my family had, was a small
lamp you could use in one room at a time. My family wasn't any different from
the rest of the villagers in Caesse (pronounced Kyez). Nobody had lights. We
always prayed for cloudless evenings which would allow the moon's rays to
bring some light to our small home.
There are many examples when light would not only be a convenience, but a
necessity. For example, if someone in the home became ill at night, or if a
woman was to give birth, it was nearly impossible to see to give help when it
was needed.
The lack of lighting also made it very difficult to complete my homework and
it caused me terrible eye strain and headaches. Many nights I cried knowing I
could not complete my school assignments.
When a lighting system was put in my friend's house, it was nothing short of
a miracle. The village became alive with excitement. Not only did this home
have lights, but we saw this as a sign of hope for a bright future for all of us.
