Let There Be Light
Can you believe it?
I went to the country of Haiti for 7 years and did not realize what life was
like at night without electric lights. There is a reason, and that is,
we were not exposed to typical family life at night.
During the first years, before the dormitories were built, we stayed in hotels and hotels
have generators -- so we had electric lights. For security reasons we did not travel
at night, so we always were back at the hotel when darkness fell.
When North Haiti Mission (NHM) built dormitories for its missionaries, we also had generators,
so we had electric lights for at least part of each night. The people from the
surrounding villages come to the NHM station early each evening because there is always
something going on. The local church is really the hub of activity, especially when
the missionaries are there. So, once again, we did not venture into the community
at night.
